Put Easy To Copy Links Below Every Post On Your Blog

Easy Backlinks Below Blog PostsIn this post we will look at a cool blog tip in adding Easy Links below your blog posts.Easy links are links people can copy from below each post and use to link back to your blog or blog post.First lets look at the importance of getting links to your blog and making it easy for people to link to you.

Building back links to your blog is vital, in fact I'm sure regular readers are right now thinking "Here we go again hes like a broken record".But the fact remains if you want your blog to rank high is search engines especially Google, you need to get links from other blogs and websites to your blog.So this post is about making it as easy as possible for other people to link to your blog and more specifically your individual posts.

You obviously want to make it easy for people to link to this blog but also i think people may not think of linking to the blog until they see the easy links. In this case the easy links section is telling people two things - first it's OK to link to you (Some people don't know links are appreciated) and second we want you to link to us.

Screenshot Of Easy Link Section

Create Easy Links Below Blog Posts

I used to use this below the posts on my blog some time back and it never crossed my mind to cover how it's done until a recent comment by Bollytadka asked me to share how i added them. The comment was on the Create a sub domain post.Great question Bollytadka and adding the easy backlinks gadget is in itself quiet easy.

How To Add Easy Backlinks Below Your Blog Posts

Step 1. To start this blogger tip in your dashboard click 'Layout' > 'Edit Html' > Tick the 'Expand Widget Templates' box.

Blogger layout

edit html blogger

Expand widget templates blogger

Step 2. Find the following piece of code in your blogs template :
(Click Ctrl and F for a search bar to find the code - More Info)

If is in your template html twice use the second one.

Step 3. Were the code needs to be placed - The code for the easy links needs to be placed Directly Below / Under .

Step 4. The code used to display the links - This is the code im using at the time of writing this post.If you would like your link section to be the same copy the code and place it in the area shown above :
(Note : This code is set to automatically display links to Your Posts and Homepage you do not need to change anything)

Write About Or Link To This Post On Your Blog - Easy Links :

Link Directly To This Post :

Link To The Homepage :

Simply copy and paste all that code and place it were shown above then save your template.
I have highlighted in red the text and titles I'm using in case you want to change them.

Other Easy Links Options

By breaking up the code you could have a link to only the post or only the homepage :

This code will display a link to the post only :

This code will display a link to homepage only :

You could use the link to homepage on your sidebars or footer area instead of below the posts. To do this you would add the code to a Html/Javascript gadget.

It is an option to consider and thanks to Bollytadka for the question, if you would like to suggest a post or have any questions or suggestions feel free to ask in the comments or by using the Contact Me link in the menu bar.

What Other Ads Can Be Used With AdSense On Your Blog

For bloggers AdSense is the main option when it comes to making money from blogs. In fact AdSense is the only option when it comes to target advertising on your blog. There are two reasons behind this, first under the AdSense terms and conditions (T.O.S.) you may only use one target advertising service on your blog or website.By target advertising what is meant is an Advertiser like AdSense that crawl your blogs content and deliver Ads based on the content of each page. The second reason AdSense is the only option for target advertising is the competition is at best poor. You can only use one so the smart money is on AdSense and not a competitor like Bidvertiser.

Online Advertising Options

Note : Their are some affiliate links in this post for Infobarrel and Chitika.

I go in to this in more dept in a recent article i wrote for InfoBarrel that you may also want to check out for ways to make more money from AdSense that are within the T.O.S. - 12 Ways To Make More From AdSense without getting banned. In fact Joining Inforbarrels AdSense sharing scheme will also help increase your AdSense earnings, you can get all the info on joining here - Make Money From Info Barrel.

Getting back to the subject, we know we cant use two advertisers that use content to target ads at your readers so what advertising can you use ? Lets first look at a few options and then i will tell you what in my opinion is the best option.

Types Of Ads That Can Be Used With AdSense

Directly Selling Advertising On Your Blog - You can sell ad space on your blog, you can sell the ad space directly or use an outside agency to sell the advertising for you.The outside agency like Buy sell ads provide you with "Advertise Here" banners and when people click they buy that space from the agency. The agency is a middleman and takes a cut for it's services. The problem with selling ad space or more to the point getting people to buy the ad space is you need traffic and lots of it.If your blog is not getting a few thousand page views a day its likely to be a waste of time as you wont find buyers.

Affiliate Advertising On Your Blog - Affiliate advertising works in a similar way to selling ad space, you place banner ads on your blog for other websites. The big difference is when you sell ad space you are paid Weekly/Monthly or for impressions with affiliate marketing you get paid when someone clicks and ad on your blog and buys a product or spends money on the advertisers website. You will get paid a commission and the commissions vary for each advertiser.

Some of the options for affiliate advertising include the popular Amazon which can be added automatically for Blogger users.Google have their affiliate branch (Of course) the Google option is the Google affiliate network and this can be connected with your AdSense account. In fact their is no shortage of affiliate marketplaces such as Clickbank and Commission Junction to name a few.

Search Targeted Advertising - While i do display affiliate ads from both clickbank and the Google affiliate network the advertiser i make most from after AdSense is Chitika.Chitika ads work on a Pay Per Click system like AdSense but because they target the ads in a different way you can use them along with AdSense.

How Chitika Ads Work - While AdSense crawl your blog and base the ads on the keywords and phrases used Chitika ads are based fully on search traffic.Once you Sign Up For Chitika and add the code to your blog ads are only displayed to search traffic. So if someone finds this blog by searching Google for Blogger Tips they will be shown ads based on Blogger tips, if someone comes to this blog in any other way Chitika ads will not be displayed (You have the option to use filler ads).

I have Chitika ads in the sidebar of this blog right now - If you came here via a search engine you will see them, if you came directly or via any other link or feed they are not visible.

There is a bit more into the workings of Chitika ads that you can find out on their website or help pages.I would defiantly recommend checking it out and you can get all the extra information and sign up options here : Chitika Ad Network.

InfoRemember you can get all these tips sent directly to your email and stay a step ahead. Its a quick and easy service Provided for Free by Google.Just fill in the Email form below the post.
If you need extra help on this or any tutorial just leave a comment, I love comments and feedback so this Blog is Do-Follow - when you comment here it helps Your Blogs Google rank !
With any advertiser including AdSense traffic equals cash plain and simple. But you don't need to be getting monster amounts of traffic, a steady flow of a few hundred page views a day may help pay for your family holiday.

Have You Had Success With Chitika Or Any Of The Mentioned Advertisers Mentioned ?

What advertising if any do you use on your blog ?

Add The Title Tag Attribute To Text And Image Links

There are many extra attributes or tags you can add to the text links and image links you use on your blog and in your blog posts. One of the attributes i use are title tags, by adding a title to your links and images you can let people know were the link is leading to or for images you can use it to describe an image.Once you add the title when someone places their cursor over the text link or image the title you added will appear. This is like a tool tip effect and although its not required it is a nice extra for your links and images.

html link title tags attribute

Even when the link is descriptive you can add the title for extra info.Hove your cursor over this link and you will see the tool tip "Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage" :

Spice Up Your Blog

This Image is also using the same title tag :
(The title attributes can be added to images along with the alt tag)

Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage

You will also notice most links on Spice Up Your Blog such as the links in the menu bar and sidebar have the title attribute added. In fact were ever possible i use the title attribute, for gadgets link recent posts it is out of my control.I used the titles on these links not only to give more information but also it's something not seen on all blogs so it's a neat extra.

Adding Title Tags To Your Links

This is the text link above without a title :

Spice Up Your Blog

Now you can see were i added : title="Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage"
title="Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage" href="http://www.spiceupyourblog.com/" target="_blank">Spice Up Your Blog
Note : Make sure there is a space between the end of the title and the start of the next piece of code.

For the image you do the very same thing, This is the Image code without title attribute :

Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage

Now the title is added to the image code :

title="Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ZcBl6gZGt_XahD6CJu6CceskTNS9MZlTauYSRs29vVGCWFl_0WIMzYtrOZ2dPgWljot5VFjrzpAl46whaqCsow9lv3oe0Z8L-_KaV70JcoXnkUusvCqdaZvXdjYVNCaSXTUYWPHM14LU/s1600-h/blogger+guy.png" target="_blank">Go To The Spice Up Your Blog Homepage

I think it's a good idea to use titles for links and it only takes a few extra seconds while writing your posts. If you want to add titles to the links in menu bars or other links in your template you will have to add the attribute in your templates html.

Were you already using the title attribute on your links or will you start now ?

Manually Pick The URL Of Bogger Posts For Better Search Rank

increase google rankOne of the factors that can come into play when Google and other search engines crawl you blog is the URLs used for your posts. The post URL is the address assigned to each post you publish.Having Keywords in the URL of your blog posts will make it easier for search engines to index you blog and can help your posts rank higher in search results. In this post i will show you a blogger trick to increase Google rank of your posts using your post URLs.

Blogger do not directly provide you with the option to pick the URL for each post. The URL for your blog posts is automatically generated using the date (month and year) and the title you gave the post.

Examples

Lets take for example a post i published last week, the title of the post was as follows :

"How To Add AdSense And Other Gadgets Beside Your Blogger Header"

This post will automatically have the URL something like this :

http://www.spiceupyourblog.com/2010/03/how-to-add-adsense-and-other.html

As you can see there is only one keyword in this URL that google could use to index the post and that's "AdSense" the rest of the URL makes no sense and gives no extra information.I know the post title will have that information but the more ways you can tell Google what you posts are about the better.Having "how-to-add-adsense-and-other" in the URL is doing nothing to help increase Google rank.

Taking Control Of The Post URL

But it need not be like this, for the past few months i have been taking control over the URL generated for my blog posts.I have been making sure that the URL contains Keywords relating to the post and the URL even explains what the post is about. This can be key when you are looking to achieve what all bloggers are looking to do and increase Google rank.

How Can You Determine The URL Use For Your Posts?

If you look at the post from the example above the URL is not using

"how-to-add-adsnese-and-other"
it is using
"adsense-beside-header-blogger-blogs".

This is the full URL for that post :
(You can click the link to see the post in a new window)

http://www.spiceupyourblog.com/2010/03/adsense-beside-header-blogger-blogs.html

This URL is actually now made up entirely of key words and it is an actual search term :

"AdSense beside header blogger blogs"

How to take control of the URLs used for your blog posts

The best way to explain the is by using the terms "Short Title" and "Long Title".

For every post i pick a short title and a long title, the short title will be used to create the URL and the long title will be the actual title you see for the post.

The long title for the post i mentioned above is this :

"How To Add AdSense And Other Gadgets Beside Your Blogger Header"

I then decide on a "short title" for the post, this is what i choose :

"AdSense beside header blogger blogs"

-Once i was ready to publish the post i gave it the short title and clicked publish.
-As soon as the post published i clicked 'Edit Post' and changed the title to the long title.

So the post was only using the short title for a few seconds but this was long enough for the URL to be generated and the URL generated was the URL i wanted full of keywords and search terms.

By doing this i am getting the best of everything - I'm getting the URL i wanted full of keywords and very search engine friendly and I'm also getting the title i wanted.

You can check any post on this blog from the past few months (I didn't use this trick from the start) and you will see the URL is totally different to the actual title. This trick has defiantly helped my blog posts get indexed better and rank higher on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.

You cant go back and change the URLs you used in the past but i Highly recommend using this technique for all future posts.

Notes :

*Keep you short URL down to about 4-5 words any longer will be cropped.
*Make sure to have the long URL ready so you can edit the post and change the title quickly, you want the proper post title in place as quickly as passable.
*If you are using scheduled posts you obviously wont be there to make the quick change, maybe you could leave the short title in place until you are back to your computer.

This is a top tip for better S.E.O. on blogger, you can find lots more tips to help you blog rank higher on Search engines here.

Blogger Custom Domains - How To Create A Sub Domain

When you first start your blog on blogger.com you are provided with a free URL / Web Address. When i started this blog i choose the free URL www.spiceyourblog.blogspot.com.This free URL is different to a normal URL and is called a Sub Domain, the reason it is called a sub domain is because it is part of a main domain. The main domain in question is www.blogspot.com and every blog started on blogger is given a sub domain connected to www.blogspot.com.

It is hard explain it any clearer than that, but the main thing to know is that if you bought a domain name directly from Blogger or Google you can also create a sub domain for the main domain you bought.

connect sub domain to enom blogger

Lets look at an example - The domain name for this blog is www.spiceupyourblog.com and i bought this domain directly from blogger.

Last week i added a sub domain to www.spiceupyourblog.com , i wanted a unique about me page (We will look into this in a later post) so i created this sub domain :

www.about.spiceupyourblog.com

You can see the address is in the same format as the blogspot domains :

www.xxxx.blogspot.com
www.xxxx.spiceupyourblog.com

As Sub domains are just additions to your original domain they are free.

I have used a sub domain for an about me page but the possibility's are endless :

www.forum.spiceupyourblog.com
www.templates.spiceupyourblog.com
www.contact.spiceupyourblog.com

You could have sales pages, sign up pages, landing pages, anything you like really, you could even start a whole new blog using a sub domain.

Setting Up A Sub Domain With Blogger Bought Domains

The main reason people buy domains directly from blogger is ease of use. When you buy directly from Blogger all the work involved in connecting the new domain to your blog is done for you.For a beginner this is very important, However changing the settings of a domain bought directly from Blogger is a little tricky.

So far we have talked about buying domain names directly from blogger, of course Blogger is owned by Google so in fact you are buying from Google (You are using Enom but lets not make it too confusing).

Once you bought your domain you were given a Google Apps account, Remember ?

The first step is to go to your Google Apps account, so lets get started.

Step 1. Go To Google Apps : https://www.google.com/a/

Step 2. On the Google apps home page under the header you will see the log in option:

"Returning User ? Sign In Here" <--Click that option

Step 3. In the area provided Enter Your Domain Name and from the drop down menu choose "Manage This Domain" then click Go as shown below :

create sub domain blogger

You still have to enter your username and password - This is the username associated with your Domain. You got a free Email account with your domain name this is the username.

sub domain enom

Step 4. You are now in your Google Apps dashboard.

Click "Domain Settings" Then "Domain Names" Then "Advanced DNS Settings" as shown below :

enom create sub domain

Step 5. You are now at the last step within Google Apps, you will be provided with a username and password to log into Enom and manage the advanced settings.

Remember or copy the username and Click "Sign in to DNS console" then sign in your domain management with those details.

You will now be on a page similar to the one below :

google apps create sub domain

Step 6. Click the "Edit" button for the section "Host Records" as shown below :

google domains

Step 7. For this example we are going to add a contact subdomain - The sub domain will be :

www.contact.spiceupyourblog.com

A - Click "Add New" (circled in red below) Twice to open two new sections.

B - Enter contact and www.contact (circled in blue below) into the "host name" areas.

C - Enter ghs.google.com. (circled in black below) in both "address" areas

D - Enter CNAME(Alias) (Circled in brown below) in the "Record Type" areas.

how to sub domain blogger

Step 8. Once your sure you have everything in the right place click save in the bottom right.

You have now created a Sub Domain and the next step is to create the blog that is going to use that sub domain.

InfoRemember you can get all these tips sent directly to your email and stay a step ahead. Its a quick and easy service Provided for Free by Google.Just fill in the Email form below the post.

Creating A Blog And Connecting To Your Sub Domain

If you are creating a sub domain for your blog you have obviously already gone through the process of connecting a domain to blogger.Connecting your sub domain is the very same.

You create your new blog, pick a name, choose the blogspot URL - you will be changing this to your sub domain so its not important.

Once your new blog is set up go to Settings > Publishing > Switch To Advanced Settings > Enter the Sub domain you created into the area provided > Scroll to the bottom of the page and save.

As with your original domain your blogger sub domain may take a little time to connect although usually it connects within a few hours.

I hope you can follow the steps and take advantage of Sub Domains, remember if you do not renew a domain or let a domain expire you will loose the domain and all associated sub domains.

Let us know if you managed to create some Sub Domains for your blogger blog.

Did you know you could create sub domains ?

Endless Template Options With The New Blogger Template Designer

There had been hints and whispers that blogger had something big planned for templates and blog design.I thought they were going to add more default templates and let designers submit new blogger templates to a gallery. But what thy have done it a Whole Lot Better ! The blogger template designer was realised today and it is the real deal.

I have been known to have the odd rant about the customization on blogger when in the forum, but even i have to give kudos for this (I will find something else to rant about). The reason I'm so excited about the blogger template designer is not just the features realised today on Blogger in draft but also the possibility's that have been opened going forward. You really have got millions of new blogger templates, you could give your blog a new look every day.

How The Blogger Template Designer Works

To get all the info go to the Blogger In Draft Blog : Blogger in Draft: The Blogger Template Designer

When Blogger release a new feature the first make it available in draft. This way any problems or errors can be ironed out before it is released on the main blogger site. This usually takes a week or two.So Remember to use the template designer you must be logged into Blogger in draft : http://draft.blogger.com/

How To Use A Drop Cap Wrapped Large First Letter In Your Blog Posts

Many newspapers make the first letter of their articles a feature.I'm sure you have seen newspaper articles with a large first letter that stretches down four or five lines, with the text wrapped around the large letter.I have heard this called a drop cap or newspaper effect but for the want of a better term we will call it the large letter effect. And with this blogger tip you can have this cool large letter effect on your blog posts.

To get the first letter of your blog posts large and wrapped in text you must add a small piece of code to your template and a tag to the first letter in your posts. This blog trick is easy set up and you can use it on all future posts or go back and make a slight change to your archive posts so they have the large letter effect.

Screenshot of large letter in blog post :

Note - We have an easier update version of this effect here - A Simple Way To Use A Drop Cap Large First Letter On Your Blog.

large first letter effect blogger

You can see the post this screenshot is from here : Large Letter Effect

Using The Large Letter Effect On Blogger

Step 1. In your dashboard click 'Layout' > 'Edit Html'

Blogger layout

edit html blogger

Step 2. Find the following code in your blogs html :
(Click Ctrl and F for a search bar to find the code - More Info)

]]>

Step 3. Place this code Directly Above / Before ]]>

.post large { float:left; color: $headerBgColor; font-size:100px; line-height:80px; padding-top:1px; padding-right:5px; }

Step 4. Save your template - But were not finished

Step 5. You now have the code in your template that will allow the effect to be created, but now we must add a tag to the letter we want to have the large effect.

To do this you add the following tag to the first letter in your posts :

FIRST LETTER HERE

In the example i showed above the letter B is large so i placed the tags on each side of B :

Blogger

You could of course start every paragraph with a large letter or selected paragraphs with the large letter effect.

Save Time By Adding The Tags To Your Post Template

You can now use your post template to have the large tags automatically added to each post thus saving time.

1.Click Settings > Formatting

2.Scroll to the bottom of the page were you will locate the post template setting

3.Add the tags into the post template area and save. Now every time you create a new post the large tags will already be in place you just put the first letter between them.

If you wish to use the effect on your older posts you will have edit the posts and add the large tags.

If you have any problems help is only a comment away !

I think its a great effect and add some style to your blog posts, what do you think ?

How The Change The Width Of The Blogger Comment Form

blogger comment bubbleA very popular recent post we did showed how to add a reply option to the blogger comments. So i decided to add another nice blogger comments trick that can improve both the appearance and performance of your comments. The area you write the text of your comments into, known as the comment form is by default very narrow. This is not a big problem, but when you see the comment forms on other blogs they tend to be similar in width to the post area. This makes the form look better and fit well with the layout of a blog and also it's easier to write comments, especially longer comments.

Changing the width of the comments on blogger is very easy and i have it broke into a few steps for you.First lets look at some examples.I have changed the width of the blogger comment form on one of my test blogs and here you can see the before and after screenshots :

How Much Advertising is too Much ?

Advertising is a great means of generating revenue from your blog. But whether you use AdSense, InfoLinks, Kontera or one of the other similar pay per click platforms or you even sell your own ad space, there’s a limit you should impose.

A blog with too much advertising on it is detrimental to your readers, your advertisers and you!

Excessive ads, particularly graphical ones, detract attention away from the content of the site, which is what your readers are interested in. If attention is deflected from the content, your readers aren’t getting what they came to your site for. Why, therefore, would they ever come back? This means you lose out on readers.

How Much Is Too Much City Scene

Advertisers suffer too. Take, as an example, an amazing blog about classic cars. Let’s say this blog has 1000 subscribers and a further couple of thousand daily readers. If this blog already has a clear layout, one ad on that site (providing the advertiser is in a related niche)is going to get attention. Two ads will get noticed and each has a reasonable chance of being clicked on. Put twenty on there, however, and not only does each of the advertisers have a far lower chance of being clicked on but your readers are also likely to be irritated by the over presence of material designed to try and get them to buy something.

But just where is the line? Is there a magic formula to this? No. There isn’t. How much advertising you can realistically use on your blog before it becomes too much depends on several factors. It depends on the type of advertising, location of the advertising and how it is located in relation to your content. Flashing banners ads, for example, are much more intrusive than the Adsense text ads. So where you can probably use 5 or even 6 text ads from Google in your side bar, six vertical blingy banners would be far, far too much.

Before deciding on how much advertising to use, consider how many posts you have too. A blog with three posts, for example, that is only updated once in a blue moon yet has thirty ads on it screams out to readers that it’s a blog specifically for revenue generation and not essentially about providing information to readers. If you have a new blog, advertising should be introduced slowly.

I suppose to key rule is that the focus of the blog should not be lost to advertising. Your readers read your blog because the content covers topics they are interested in. They don’t read your blog because they are looking for sponsored links by Google. And while most readers are perfectly understanding of the fact that bloggers putting time and effort into maintaining a site want to generate some sort of revenue, when advertising becomes the main focus, you lose the readers who are interested in content.

It’s a fine balancing act, that’s for sure. But if you’re not sure whether you have too much advertising or not, you can always ask for honest and brutal feedback from your readers.
